The dishes need to be washed. The laundry needs to be hung out. The floor needs to be mopped. The bed sheets need to be changed. The clothes need to be ironed. The toys need to be tidied. Oh, there's so much on the ‘to-do’ list! Well, household chores, as the name suggests, are tedious but necessary. As much as I try to go about my daily duties with a cheerful heart, knowing my God takes pleasure in me carrying out my responsibilities delightfully, there are still times when I simply can't get over being frustrated by my endless tasks. And if my husband ever comments about the number of dishes accumulated in the sink, he is treated to my deadly stare.
Every household has its own standard of hygiene and cleanliness, subjected to the tolerance limits of the adults and also the number of hands on deck. After a long episode of finally rocking the baby to sleep or clearing up poop or puke for the umpteenth time, the last thing I want to worry about is the laundry or the dirty dishes.
Oh, gimme a break!
I cherish small windows of time in the day when I can enjoy some peace and quiet when the baby is sleeping. Yes, the chores need to be done and they are also best done when the baby is sleeping. But I pick my battles and I usually choose my sanity over clean dishes. So those dishes or dirty clothes can wait. Just one more day.
He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. - Psalm 23:2
